If you want to be happy, start by being grateful!
“If you want to be happy, be.” – Leo Tolstoy
I have been wondering many times what is happiness, how can I achieve it, what I have to do to get it, and you know what? The first important thing I understood was that happiness is a state of mind, is happening somewhere inside of us, it has to do with our emotions, with our feelings.
I understood that happiness is not going to happen to me if I will do or not a certain thing, because happiness is not related with things that we achieve, it has to do with the way we look and feel the things that happen to us.
Thinking that you will be happy when you will get promoted, when you will buy a brand new car, when you will get a house or when you will find your soulmate is not the correct attitude.
Like this, you stop yourself to enjoy the present moment. Is like you were saying: “If I won’t get what I want, I won’t be happy at all!”, and that is not true.
Maybe you didn’t get the promotion, but you discovered a new way to make more money.
Maybe you don’t have enough money to change your car, but your old car is still working well.
Maybe you didn’t found your soulmate yet, but you are surrounded by loving people who really care about you.
Don’t wait for happiness to happen, decide to be happy, and just be!
Another important fact is that your happiness doesn’t depend on others, it depends only on you and that is the greatest thing, because nobody will ever know what’s best for you better than you!
So, look around and count the great things that happen to you, cherish the loving people that life sent to you, be thankful because you are healthy, strong, capable, precious, loving and lovable etc.
There are plenty of things that you should be grateful about, and happy to have them in your life.
Like Tecumseh said: “When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.”
